Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a congressional proceeding.

His lawyer submitted the plea on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the case thrown out for multiple factors including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the judge they planned to file several legal requests to throw out the case before a court case, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to handle the case.

The former director's case was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into a different opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the former government recently fired.

Following the reading to the court recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the period, he was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

The federal government claim James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to news outlets data about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and charged Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"Our household have known for years that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Trump shared on social media demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
